Trying massage therapy for the first time can feel a little intimidating—but it doesn’t have to be.

At Body Balance Massage, our goal is to make your experience comfortable, relaxing, and tailored to your individual needs. Whether you’re coming in for pain relief, stress management, injury recovery, or simply to take better care of yourself, here’s exactly what you can expect during your first visit.

Before Your Appointment

When you arrive, you’ll complete a health history form if you haven’t already done so online.

Your Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) will review your health history and ask questions such as:

What brings you in today?

Where are you experiencing pain or discomfort?

How long have you had your symptoms?

Have you had massage therapy before?

Do you have any injuries or medical conditions?

What are your goals for treatment?

This conversation helps us create a treatment plan that’s appropriate for you.

Your Assessment

Before beginning treatment, your therapist may perform a brief assessment.

Depending on your concerns, this may include:

Looking at your posture

Assessing your range of motion

Identifying areas of muscle tension

Discussing your daily activities or work habits

This helps determine which muscles and structures may be contributing to your symptoms.

Getting Ready for Your Massage

Your therapist will explain the treatment plan and then leave the room so you can get on the table in privacy.

Many people wonder:

“Do I have to fully undress?”

No.

You should undress only to your comfort level.

Some clients remove everything except underwear, while others remain fully clothed depending on the type of treatment being provided. Your therapist will explain what works best for your treatment.

Throughout your appointment, professional draping techniques are always used. Only the area being treated is uncovered, while the rest of your body remains covered with a sheet and blanket.

Your comfort, dignity, and privacy are always our priority.

During Your Massage

Once you have assessed your current state, it’s time to implement strategies to restore your body's balance. Here are some effective approaches:

Every treatment is personalized.

Depending on your goals, your massage may include:

Trigger point therapy

Myofascial techniques

Joint mobilizations (when appropriate)

Your therapist will check in throughout the treatment regarding pressure and comfort.

Massage should never feel unbearable. While some areas may be tender, you should always feel comfortable communicating if you’d like lighter or deeper pressure.

After Your Massage

Some people also experience mild soreness for a day or two, especially after deeper therapeutic work. This is temporary and similar to how your muscles might feel after exercising.

Your therapist may recommend:

Drinking water throughout the day

Gentle stretching

Light movement or walking

Home exercises to support your recovery

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to change in and out of.

If you’re receiving treatments like Fascial Stretch Therapy or certain movement-based techniques, your therapist may recommend wearing comfortable athletic clothing.

What If I Want to Talk During the Treatment?

Some people enjoy chatting during their appointment, while others prefer complete silence.

Both are perfectly normal.

Your therapist will follow your lead and create an environment where you feel comfortable.

Will One Massage Fix Everything?

It depends.

Some people notice significant relief after a single treatment, while others with long-standing pain or injuries benefit from a series of appointments.

Your therapist will discuss recommendations based on your specific condition and goals, without pressure or obligation.

Is massage therapy covered by insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans cover treatment provided by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT). Body Balance Massage also offers direct billing to many insurance providers for added convenience.

Will the massage hurt?

Massage should always stay within your comfort level. Therapeutic treatments can sometimes feel intense in tight areas, but you should never feel like you have to “tough it out.” Your therapist will adjust the pressure based on your feedback.

Do I have to shave before my appointment?

No. Massage therapists are healthcare professionals, and body hair has no impact on your treatment.

What if I fall asleep?

It happens more often than you might think! Falling asleep simply means your body is relaxing. Many clients drift off during their massage.

Can I ask questions during my appointment?

Absolutely. We’re always happy to explain what we’re doing, why we’re treating certain areas, or answer any questions you have about your recovery.
